Busy vs Tally is a ledger fight. Scan-to-Tally is a different job.

Accounts heads mix two questions. “Which software holds our ledgers?” and “Who types supplier photocopies into that software?” Busy and Tally answer the first. EntryLedger answers the second, and only in front of Tally.

If you came here because someone said “Busy is cheaper than Tally so let’s move, and also we will scan invoices,” stop. Those are two projects. Migration touches every voucher, every GST return mapping, every auditor habit. A gate touches the inbox. Mixing them is how a six-week AP fix becomes a year of parallel books.

One table, three jobs

Features below are the jobs as each vendor describes themselves on their site, plus what we ship. I will not invent Busy’s inventory depth or Tally’s licence price. Click through.

Keep Tally? Then you want a gate.

Factories that already close in Tally have years of ledgers, cost centres, GST classifications, and a CA who can find a voucher in their sleep. Replacing that to “make invoice entry nicer” is backwards. Tally already imports. The gap is a file whose GSTIN checksums and whose totals close. That is the import post plus the gate on /validation.

When Busy makes sense

Busy is a real Indian accounting product. Their site is busywin.com. If you are starting books from zero, or you already run Busy, or your CA’s practice is Busy-native, look at Busy on its merits: GST, inventory, multi-company, whatever they list this year. Price-sensitive AMC vs Tally licence is a conversation with both vendors, not with me. I will not paste a rupee figure from memory.

Busy makes sense when the pain is the ledger itself: you hate Tally’s model, your group already standardised on Busy, or a new entity should match sister companies on Busy. Those are books reasons.

Busy does not magically read a 150 dpi photocopy. Neither does Tally. Switching ledgers does not invent a GSTIN Mod-36 check on the scan. If the only pain you can name is “clerks type invoices,” a migration is theatre. Put a gate in front of the ledger you already trust. Measure straight-through on your paper. Then decide if books still need to move. Spoiler for most Tally shops: they do not.

When Tally stays (the usual factory)

Tally Prime is the ledger a lot of Indian manufacturers already run. Official page: tallysolutions.com/tally-prime. I will not quote market share. I will say: if your trial balance, stock, and GST already live there, the conservative move is keep it.

What Tally will not do for you: stare at a photocopied GSTIN and refuse a voucher when the check character is wrong. That is not an insult. Tally trusts the operator. EntryLedger distrusts the scan until checksum and arithmetic pass, or a human confirms. After that, Tally is the right place for the voucher.

Import remains Tally’s. Gateway of Tally → Import Data. Follow Tally Help. Ledger names must match. That friction exists whether the CSV came from a clerk, Busy (if you were converting), or us. We seed mappings in your workspace so “Acme Steels” is not a nightly surprise.

When EntryLedger is the wrong buy

You do not use Tally and you will not. We export for Tally import. We do not sell a Busy exporter. If your books are Busy, Zoho Books, or SAP, say so and we should both leave the call.

You have almost no photocopy tail. Everything is IRN JSON. Then the capture problem is small. Filing and 2B still matter; that is Clear or your CA, not us. See Clear vs EntryLedger.

You need on-prem because legal said so. We host. Appliance is a conversation, not the default SKU.

Price, without mixing SKUs

EntryLedger: ₹1.40 a page to 40,000 pages a month, ₹1.20 after. At 40,000 pages that is ₹56,000. Self-serve: straight-through measured on your own paper. That is /pricing.

Tally and Busy sell licences and usually AMC. Those are annual books costs. Do not add our page meter to a Tally licence and call it “Tally got expensive.” Do not subtract a hoped-for Busy discount from AP labour and call it ROI on scanning. Build two columns: books (Busy or Tally quote) and AP capture (our meter vs clerks vs another capture tool). If a salesperson blends them, they are hiding the job.

Indian AP keying is inexpensive. Do not justify a ledger migration with Western salary math. Do not justify EntryLedger with “we will fire the desk.” The case is a wrong GSTIN, a total that never summed, a duplicate payment, and the filing month that follows. See manual vs EntryLedger cost.

Talk tracks that do not insult Busy or Tally

“We might move to Busy.” Answer: if the ledger is the pain, compare Busy and Tally on their sites. If the pain is photocopies into Tally, moving books will not prove the math. Run 500 scans through a gate first.

“Tally should just OCR.” Answer: Tally is books. OCR without a GSTIN and arithmetic gate posts confident mistakes. We write a file Tally already imports.

“Can you replace Busy?” Answer: no. We do not keep your ledgers.

“Our CA likes Busy.” Answer: good, if you run Busy. We are not in that deal. If you run Tally, keep the CA’s Tally workflow and add evidence on the scan.

Bring the CA when the question is migration. They will price opening balances, GSTIN in masters, and the first return after cutover. That invoice is usually larger than a month of ₹1.40/page. Write both numbers down. Then ask whether AP typing was ever a reason to cut over.

Cloud suites sit on the ledger side too

If the answer to “keep Tally?” is no, Busy is not the only other books product. Zoho Books and other cloud suites exist. Their sites, their prices. They still do not read your photocopies unless you buy a capture add-on, and that add-on still needs a math gate. EntryLedger does not export into Zoho. Mentioning them is only to stop the false binary “Busy or Tally or us.”

Implementation time is part of the decision. A Tally shop adding a gate can import a CSV in the ritual they already know. Standing up Busy or a cloud suite means masters, users, GSTIN on every ledger, opening trial balance, and the first month where two systems disagree. Ask the CA what that month costs in hours. Put that next to a per-page gate that measures straight-through on your own paper. Those are not similar risks.

If you are still unsure, do the cheap experiment. Keep Tally. Run the gate. If straight-through is weak, you stop. If it is strong, you still have Tally, and Busy can wait until you have a books reason. That order is the whole article.
